"'Machine Wilderness'...conveyed a consciousness of consequence, a sense that new technologies can yield earth-changing results, that artistic vision can drive such technologies to such results, and that usefulness, and especially useful transformation, is a form of beauty." - Peter Frank, Huffington Post
In September, 2012, the worlds of art, science and technology came together in Albuquerque, New Mexico for a six day, international conference, which kicked off a season-long exhibition and series of public programs around the region. ISEA2012 Albuquerque: Machine Wilderness was the 18th International Symposium on Electronic Art. The title “Machine Wilderness” referenced the New Mexico region as an area of rapid growth and technology within vast expanses of open land, and presented visions for how technology and the natural world can coexist to support life on Earth.
The main juried exhibition was based at 516 ARTS and The Albuquerque Museum of Art & History, with five satellite venues. The conference offered 250 sessions at 16 venues, including talks, workshops, screenings, performances, an in-depth education program and the ISEA2012 Downtown Block Party. Over 100 artists and 400 presenters from 30 countries presented and/or are exhibited at ISEA2012, and attendees came from 37 countries. It was an international honor that Albuquerque was selected as the host for the United States in 2012. The next conferences will be in Sydney, Australia and then in Dubai.
The small nonprofit organization 516 ARTS was the lead producer of the ISEA2012, in partnership with The University of New Mexico and The Albuquerque Museum of Art & History. The project was led by Executive Producer Suzanne Sbarge of 516 ARTS and Artistic Director Andrea Polli of UNM, together with a team of organizers that included the staffs of 516 ARTS and The Albuquerque Museum of Art & History, event production company Kesselman-Jones, a steering committee representing participating organizations and hundreds of volunteers.
